Can I Garden If I Buy A Patio Home?

primroseOne of the biggest advantages of owning a Cincinnati patio home is the fact that lawn care comes with the home as part of the HOA fee.  No more mowing the grass or shoveling snow!  And in most cases the home comes with some nice landscaping, some shrubs, trees and flowers that are typically tended to, also as part of your HOA fee.

But what if you don't want to totally give up tinkering in the garden?  While there are rules about what you can't and can't do, most owners will find that they can do MOST of what they'd like to do, if there preference leans to flower gardens, water features and container gardens.  You CAN expand the standard landscaping package, but understand that you assume responsibility for the extra you bring in.  If your rose bush doesn't survive the winter, it's on you to replace it (or remove it). 

But if you want to go big time and plant a row of corn or mounds of potatoes, well in that case you'll be out of luck (in MOST cases).  There are some communities that include garden plots for the residents (e.g. Drees Homes Elliott Farms community).  And in some cases such as Cincinnati's ONLY 55+ community Heritage At Miami Bluffs, there are area opportunities to have a garden plot.  In this case, Hamilton Township annually places a garden area just outside the Heritage At Miami Bluffs' community gates.  Reserve a plot and grow what you'd like!

Basically, it's important to review the community rules prior to purchase to make sure you can do what you'd like to do.  And with a little planning and a little work, you can enjoy blooms most of the year!

Good advice about gardening if you are choosing to purchase a Patio Home. Review the  community rules and covenants and decide if you can live with the parameters.
